VEIN DISEASE

What is Venous Reflux Disease?

Venous insufficiency is a condition in which the veins have problems sending blood from the legs back to the heart. Normally, valves in your deeper leg veins keep your blood flowing back toward the heart so it does not collect in one place. But the valves in varicose veins are either damaged or missing. This causes the veins to stay filled with blood, especially when you are standing. Chronic venous insufficiency is a long-term condition. It occurs because a vein is partly blocked, or blood is leaking around the vales of the veins. Venous Reflux Disease is progressive and over time symptoms can worsen if left untreated.

DIAGNOSING VEIN DISEASE

A Vein Disease diagnostic workup starts with medical history, a physical examination of the varicose veins, the feet, and legs. However a history and exam alone are not enough. Therefore diagnosing Vein Disease accurately also requires a Venous Duplex Ultrasound in order to further analyze the extent of the venous insufficiency, as well as determine whether other health issues are involved. The Duplex Ultrasound test is simple, noninvasive and only takes about 30 minutes. A Duplex Ultrasound is a vascular ultrasound procedure that uses sound waves which produce images that can assess the structure of the leg veins and the flow of blood. Once the venous insufficiency is properly diagnosed, options are explored for the varicose vein treatment that will yield the most beneficial results.
